MECHANIZED CAVALRY VEHICLES
M8 ARMORED CAR "GREYHOUND"
Mobility may best describe the M8. With a top speed of 55 MPH and the stability of its 6 wheel drive it was difficult for enemy gunners to acquire a target and fire. Armed with the 37mm cannon, a .30 caliber coax and a .50 caliber anti-aircraft machine gun. The M8 was very effective against infantry, trucks and horse drawn artillery units. The M8 became the mainstay of reconnaissance troops and usually supported recon jeeps. Another improtant role played by the M8 was in the area of communication. Mounted with two radios, the short range FM SRC510 used for internal platoon communications, and the SRC506 AM, which provided longer range communication from platoon to troop and troop to squadron. It offered a superior ability to communicate and operate over larger areas and provide more up to date information to their command structure.
